[Written & Structure] Adjective Clause

[Catatan pertemuan ke-2 Toefl Preparation – Written & Structure]

Adjective clause adalah klausa yang menerangkan kata benda (noun). Karena klausanya adalah adjective, posisinya terletak tepat setelah kata kerja yang dijelaskan.

Adjective connectors :
– who : digunakan untuk orang/person
– which : digunakan untuk benda/things
– that : digunakan untuk orang dan benda.
– whom : terletak antara orang dan orang. Ex : The man whom I met last night is a teacher
– whose : terletak antara noun dan kata kepunyaan (possessive words). Ex : The man whose daughter is my friend can speak Japanese.

Penyederhanaan Adjective Clause :
Who/which+ verb –> who/which dapat dihilangkan jika diikuti oleh kata kerja (verb).
– Jika kata kerja aktif, who/which diganti V-ing
– Jika kata kerja pasif, who/which diganti V3
Contoh :
1) The poet who got the nobel prize is very popular==>dapat diubah menjadi : The poet getting the nobel prize is very popular.
2) The novel which is written by Dee is very touching==>dapat diubah menjadi : The novel written by Dee is very touching.

Be careful
Contoh 1 :
– The man is telling the story. –>telling di sini berfungsi sebagai predikat
– The man telling the story is very cute. –> telling di sini berfungsi sebagai adjective, yaitu penyederhanaan dari who + verb (who is telling/who tells/who told).
The man telling the stroy dapat ditukar/di-swap menjadi the telling man the story.

Contoh 2 :
– The book has been written twice. –>written sebagai predikat
– The book written twice was just published. –>written sebagai adjective clause, yaitu penyederhanaan dari which + verb.
The book written twice dapat di-swap dengan the written book twice

Tips dasar written and structure bagian sentence completion :

  • Identifikasi bagian kalimat yang hilang, apakah subjek, predikat, atau objek–>Temukan dulu di mana predikatnya
  • Periksa apakah subjeknya jamak (plural) / tunggal (singular)
  • Periksa apakah kalimatnya present / past.
